High School Summer Theatre Program to Present “The SpongeBob Musical”;

Auditions Set for Feb. 29-March 1

Normal, Ill. – Feb. 8, 2024 – Normal’s High School Summer Theatre Program returns to the Connie Link Amphitheatre this summer with a production of “The SpongeBob Musical” June 13-22. Auditions are set for Thursday, Feb. 29 and Friday, March 1, with callbacks on Sunday, March 3. The program is open to students in grades 8-12 at the time of auditions, and there is no cost to participate.

Optional pre-audition workshops will be held 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 and Sunday, Feb. 25 for anyone who would like feedback as they practice and prepare for auditions. For complete details and audition signup, visit the High School Summer Theater website— the go-to resource for anyone interested in auditioning, being a part of the prep and/or show crews or musicians looking to join the band.

The High School Summer Theatre program became “fee-free” for participants since coming under the auspices of the Town’s Cultural Arts Department in 2022. Also in recent years, the program has expanded outreach and engagement through strategic partnerships within the greater Bloomington-Normal theatre community—for example, holding joint auditions with Coalescence Theatre Project in 2023.

Civic Arts Manager Adam Fox says this year, “an exciting opportunity has presented itself by sheer coincidence,” as The Penguin Project of McLean County is also staging a version of “SpongeBob” this spring. “We’re entirely supportive of each other’s productions and already brainstorming ways we might collaborate,” Fox said, from cross-promotional opportunities to potential cast get-togethers to explore the script and characters in tandem.
