Public Meeting - Uptown South Community Feedback Opportunity

Tuesday, September 27, 2022

The Town of Normal encourages residents and community members to attend an in-person public meeting to provide feedback on the future of Uptown South, the area south of the railroad tracks near City Hall.

Time: 6:30 p.m. Central Time

Date: Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022

Place: Room 409, City Hall, 4th floor, 11 Uptown Circle

Uptown South, about eight acres of land in the heart of Normal, is defined as the area bounded by South Linden Street to the east, East Irving Street to the south, the Constitution Trail to the west, and the train tracks to the north.

The image is a drawn map of the study area. The map shows land around the study area. Streets, the train tracks, the train station, the Uptown Circle, and existing buildings appear on the map. The study area is outlined in a red dashed line. The north edge of the study area is the train tracks, the west edge of the study area is the Constitution Trail, the south edge of the study areas is Irving Street, and the east edge of the study area is Linden Street.

“As promised, the Town has been offering a variety of means for the public to provide feedback about what they would like to see in this area. In July, the Town asked residents to complete an online survey to provide their vision the future of this area in the heart of our community and we also hosted an online public meeting to gather initial feedback,” says Town of Normal Planner Mercy Davison. “This in-person session is the next step in the process.”

At the September 27 meeting, the design team will present three alternative land-use scenarios, developed from previous public engagement. Participants can give feedback on preferred scenarios and characteristics. Input will be gathered in a variety of ways including discussion and comments, sticky notes, voting, game activities, etc. This meeting is expected to be 1.5 hours long.

In addition to these opportunities for the public to provide input, the consultant is completing market and transportation analyses and reviewing sustainability strategies.

The Uptown South Master Plan project page on the Town of Normal’s website provides a summary of the project, milestones and additional information about the public process.
