Household Garbage Collection

The Town of Normal operates an automated wheeled garbage cart program for the collection of household waste. To have your trash collected, you must utilize a Town-issued garbage cart. Purchase a new cart using the the Town of Normal online payment option.

  • Place your cart curbside no later than 6 am on your collection day and no sooner than 6 pm on the evening before collection. Learn more about the collection days and services for your address at the My Public Services Interactive website.
  • Return your cart to your garage or behind the front line of your house within 12 hours of collection. If you live on a corner lot, carts should not be store on the outside corner of the house without proper screening.

If you have questions about the Town’s automated waste collection system please contact the Public Works office between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 309-454-9571.
 Missed Collection:
If trash was not collected by 3 p.m. on your scheduled day, check for an orange notice on your materials or for a door hanger on your front door. You may also contact the Public Works department after 2 p.m. on your regular collection day or complete an online Missed Collection Form.

Holiday Collection

Household Garbage and Recycling (in Town carts) is collected on all Holidays except Christmas Day. On Holidays that Town offices are closed, bulky waste, brush and landscape waste will not be collected.

Motor Oil/Old Gasoline

Do not set out motor oil or other flammable liquids for collection. Motor oil and gasoline can be disposed of at most service stations or automotive centers.

Unframed Glass

Unframed glass must be broken into small pieces, placed in a hard plastic container and put out with household waste in a Town-issued garbage cart. Framed glass can be placed out for bulky waste collection.

CFL Bulbs

CFL Bulbs should not be disposed of with household waste due to the mercury content in the bulbs. Most do-it-yourself stores accept CFL bulbs for recycling at either their service counter or electrical department. Batteries Plus Bulbs also accepts CFL bulbs.

Fluorescent Lighting Tubes

Fluorescent tubes can be recycled for a small fee at Batteries Plus Bulbs in Normal, IL.

Rechargeable batteries

IEPA, Energizer and Duracell all consider disposing of alkaline batteries via household trash to be safe but they should never be placed in recycling bins. Rechargeable batteries are responsible for starting fires in collection trucks, recycling facilities and landfills. Unlike single-use batteries, rechargeable batteries can spark even after they’re drained of power so they pose a real hazard.  Please drop them off at the following locations for disposal:
