High School Summer Theatre

What is the High School Summer Theatre program?

Normal's High School Summer Theatre program began in 1972. Since its inception, thousands of local students have taken part in summer productions as cast members, crew, musicians and more. The program is produced by the Town of Normal Department of Cultural Arts.

What are the shows in the 2023 Season?

Disney’s High School Musical: 7 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays, June 15-25.
Coalescence Theatre Project's Once on This Island: 7 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays , August 10-20.

Where are the performances?

All performances take place at Connie Link Amphitheatre, 621 S Linden St., Normal.

Who can participate in the High School Summer Theatre program?

The program is open to incoming freshmen through graduating seniors at any area high school.

Is there a fee to participate?

No. There is no fee required of anyone participating in any position.

Who are the production teams for each show?

This summer’s productions are led by a mix of returning company members and program first-timers. Disney’s High School Musical is Directed by Cristen Monson, with Music Director Leah Megli and Choreographer Raylene Gomez. Once on This Island will be Directed by Elaine McCoy Hill, with Music Director Deonté Mosely and Choreographer Lyndetta Loving.

How do I sign up?

Complete the Sign Up For on the High School Summer Theater website. This is for anyone interested in auditioning, being a part of the prep and/or show crews or musicians looking to join the band.

Can I be a part of both Disney High School Musical and Once on This Island?

Absolutely! The shows do not overlap, so anyone signing up to audition or be part of the production crews can opt into one or both shows.

When are Auditions & Callbacks?

Auditions for both shows: 6-9 p.m., April 13 and 14, Community Activity Center, 1110 Douglas St ., Normal
High School Musical Callbacks: Noon-4 p.m., Saturday, April 15
Once on This Island Callbacks: To be scheduled at a later date

I have a conflict with those audition dates – I’m in a show those nights! What do I do?

Auditions for those unable to attend April 13 or 14 will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, prior to callbacks.

I can’t make it to callbacks – can I still audition?

Yes. When you sign up, indicate you have a callback conflict .

What will happen at auditions?

Auditions focus on singing and movement. No need to prepare a monologue. Sides (i.e. small sections of script) will be provided for readings at callbacks. For auditions:

Prepare 32 bars (or approximately one minute) of music to sing.
Bring sheet music for the accompanist or a recorded track to play via a provided bluetooth speaker. You may also choose to sing a capella.
Expect to be taught and asked to perform a brief dance combination.

Where will the Callback & Cast Lists be posted?

The callbacks and final cast lists will be posted on the High School Summer Theater website and emailed to all who signed up to audition.

Will everyone who auditions be cast?

Not necessarily. To ensure a quality educational experience for all involved, we want to make sure the cast is the right size to provide the best opportunities possible.

What is the rehearsal schedule?

The rehearsal schedule for Disney’s High School Musical is Sunday-Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. Rehearsals start April 30, with a first cast meeting the week of April 17.
Cast members will be called only for rehearsals where they are involved.
Rehearsals will be at the Community Activity Center and at Connie Link Amphitheatre (weather permitting).

How else can I be involved in the High School Summer Theatre program if I’m not cast (or not interested in auditioning)?

Crew positions in the prep period, as well as during performances in the areas of Scenic, Paint, Props, Lighting, Sound, Costumes, Stage Management and Backstage Run Crew.
Musicians for the pit bands.
