Brian Chase- Normal Public Library

Brian Chase has served as director of the Normal Public Library since 2008. In this role, Chase leads teams responsible for the educational, cultural, informational and recreational resources provided by the library to enrich the quality of life for Normal citizens.  

During his time as director, Chase helped create the Normal Public Library Foundation, a 501(c)(3) entity dedicated to supporting the library through fundraising, advocacy and programming. He has overseen numerous improvement projects, including the remodel of the main floor and Discovery Room, addition of accessible restrooms, securing additional library parking and working collaboratively with Unit 5 to ensure all students in Normal have library cards.  

Prior to joining the Normal Public Library, Chase was the manager of Circulation Services at the Bloomington Public Library. Chase previously worked as information services librarian at Heartland Community College and at Sheean Library at Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington. 

Chase has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Western Illinois University, Macomb, and a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He completed the “Library Leadership in a Digital Age” program at Harvard University and the “Public Innovators Lab for Libraries” at Harwood Institute for Public Innovation.

Currently, Chase serves on the Resource Sharing Committee dedicated to providing the best library services to Illinois residents and optimizing the use of tax dollars to improve and increase resource sharing in Illinois. He is the coordinator for the Illinois Library Association’s (ILA) Central Illinois Library Legislative Meet-Up. 

Chase is involved with the Illinois Library Association Public Policy Committee which provides the association’s focus on legislative matters; recommends studies on projects designed to advance the development of all types of libraries; and advocates legislative action which advances library service for all residents of Illinois.  

Previously, Chase served as vice president of the Resource Sharing Alliance. He is a past chair of the Illinois Library Association Fundraising Committee, a former member of the ILA Advocacy Committee and a former juror of the American Institute of Architects/American Library Association Library Building Awards. He participated in the Illinois Library Leadership Summit and the Future of Library Cooperation in Illinois Services Task Force. 

A Bloomington-Normal resident since 1999, Chase has previously served as a volunteer coach for the Prairie Cities Soccer League.
